All month long, BAC clinicians will be bringing you some FUNctional gift ideas! Today, our occupational therapist's share a few favorites:
🔴 Critter Clinic - We love the eye-hand coordination, bilateral coordination, and problem-solving skills involved in trying out each small key to open up the different doors of this pet clinic.
🟡 Therapy putty - An OT classic! Playing with this resistive putty develops hand & finger strength, while also providing "heavy work" / proprioceptive sensory input which can help kids feel more attentive and grounded. And kids never seem to grow tired of finding hidden beads or small figurines!
🔵 Cash register - Manipulating the buttons on this cash register toy, as well as handling the differently sized coins and bills, helps to develop many different fine motor skills, including finger isolation, pincer grasp (and other functional grasp patterns), and in-hand manipulation skills. Your child practices daily living skills, too, by sorting coins and pretending to make purchases.
🔴 Scented markers - Sometimes, writing just isn't fun. But if the writing is bubblegum scented...? Sign us up!
