Shopping for supplies. Organizing pick-ups and drop-offs. Visiting new teachers, new buildings, new playgrounds. As a new school year approaches, we know that parents have a LOT of preparing to do. We don't want to add yet another thing onto an already crowded plate, and yet, we'd like to explore the potential benefits of getting your child evaluated for physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and/or speech-language therapy (ST) before heading back to school.
Identifying Strengths: The Boston Ability Center is a FUN place where children can feel known and accepted exactly as they are. Even upon their first meeting, BAC clinicians begin to zero in on the "just right challenge" for your child. Riding a zipline for the first time or independently climbing through the many layers of the colorful lycra hammock can empower children to feel competent and joyful. These successes can serve as a "bridge" as the child transitions back into the classroom, instilling confidence that we can do hard things! (And maybe even enjoy them!)
Identifying Challenges: In an initial evaluation, BAC PTs, OTs, and SLPs can help identify potential developmental delays or areas of challenge that may impact your child's academic performance and social experience at school. Our professionals are trained to assess all aspects of development, including motor skills, sensory processing, and communication abilities. Early identification allows for timely intervention and support, which can significantly improve long-term outcomes for children.
Tailoring Individualized Interventions: As we established, all children are unique, with their own strengths, challenges, and learning styles. Pursuing comprehensive evaluations prior to returning to school maximizes the amount of time that therapists and parents can work closely together to target highly specific & family-centered goals.
Enhancing School Readiness: Our evaluations equip parents and educators with valuable information about a child's abilities and areas of need, enabling them to implement strategies and accommodations ASAP to support a smooth transition to the school environment. Whether it's arranging for classroom modifications or providing assistive technology, the goal is to set a child up for success!
As parents gear up for the new school year, we highly recommend including PT, OT, and/or SLP evaluations at the Boston Ability Center in your back-to-school preparations. Early identification of developmental concerns and targeted interventions can make a world of difference in a child's academic success, social interactions, and overall well-being. By working collaboratively with therapists, educators, and other professionals, parents can ensure that their child receives the support and resources they need to thrive in school and beyond.
